Global Warming: Pros and Cons

The word ‘Global Warming’ has left a negative impression to most of us. But then, what is Global Warming? One can define Global Warming as the increase in the earth’s temperature due to the greenhouse gases in the atmosphere. Most of us are aware of the effects of this phenomenon but there are advantages as well. Let us take a look at the advantages and disadvantages of global warming.

Advantages:
  • *      More abundant food harvest from agricultural production in some areas because most plants like warmer climates.
  • *      The next Ice Age will be prevented.
  • *      Some frozen seas will be used for sea transportation.
  • *      A decrease in the use of energy for heating or warming in cold places.
  • *      A decrease in the number of deaths, both human and animal, due to cold weather.

Disadvantages:
  • *      Melting of the glaciers in ice caps of the world.
  • *      Sudden change in the ocean circulation that could result to tremendous effects in the weather thus producing typhoons and the likes.
  • *      Increase in the fresh water’s salinity.
  • *      Higher sea level that could drown small islands and could result to floods to other areas.
  • *      Drought
  • *      Decrease in agricultural production in most areas because of droughts.
  • *      Loss of animal habitats.
  • *      Forest fires because of the early drying of the forest.
  • *      Increase of death by heat strokes.
  • *      Increase of some diseases resulting to problems in health.
  • *      Water shortages in some areas.
  • *      Extinction of wild life.
  • *      More extreme and more catastrophic kinds of weather will be experienced.

With the advantages and disadvantages presented, we can analyze that the disadvantages are heavier than the advantages. Other unknown effects can occur with the continuous rise in temperature in the earth’s atmosphere. To avoid these disadvantages, it is time for us to realize our error. Let us nurture the environment instead of destroying it.

How can we help Mother Nature to rise and avoid these disadvantages? Planting trees and limiting the cutting of trees is one. Also, waste management is important. Reuse, recycle, reduce and respect. Lessen the use of non-biodegradable materials. In addition, to minimize the carbon dioxide level in the atmosphere, let us find alternative ways of energy source because the fuel combustion alone produces a lot of carbon dioxide. Conserve energy. And, the most important of all, love the environment as you love yourself.

If we can do this few things that are listed, we are not just saving Mother Nature, but we are      more saving ourselves. Be in mind that these earth does not belong to us; we just borrowed it from our children. So, we must return it unharmed and not destructed.
